Yawning informs behavioural state changing in wild spotted hyaenas

چکیده

Abstract Yawning is a complex behaviour linked to several physiological (e.g. drowsiness, arousal, thermoregulation) and social phenomena yawn contagion). Being yawning an evolutionary well-conserved, fixed action pattern widespread in vertebrates, it valuable candidate test hypotheses on its potential functions across the different taxa. The spotted hyaena ( Crocuta crocuta ), most cooperative species of Hyaenidae family, good model correlates significances. Through accurate sequential analysis performed group wild hyaenas, we found that mainly occurred during imminent behavioural state changing both juveniles adults seeing others’ elicited mirror response receiver, thus demonstrating contagion present this species. These results taken together suggest change yawner such caught by observers engage motor resonance phenomenon, contagion, possibly effective anticipating yawners’ actions. Although additional data are necessary verify whether translates into subsequent convergence alignment, our spontaneous contagious can be fundamental building blocks basis animal synchronisation highly Significant statement pervasive many species, including humans. It considered as polyfunctional cue has role regulating interactions. While studies focussed primates, little amount effort was devoted exploring carnivores. We monitored hyaenas which one carnivore In immature adult subjects, subject frequently changed after spontaneously observer.

Long-distance communication facilitates cooperation among wild spotted hyaenas, Crocuta crocuta.

Calls that catalyse group defence, as in the mobbing of predators, appear to facilitate cooperation by recruiting receivers to act collectively. However, even when such signals reliably precede cooperative behaviour, the extent to which the calls function as recruitment signals is unclear. Calls might simply arouse listeners' attention, setting off a cascade of independent responses to the thre...

Sibling competition and hunger increase allostatic load in spotted hyaenas.

Allostatis is the process of maintaining homeostatis through behavioural or physiological responses to challenges, and its cumulative energetic cost is termed allostatic load. The allostatic load hypothesis predicts that hunger and the mechanisms that establish and maintain social dominance should have a strong impact on allostatic load. In spotted hyaenas, dominance between twin siblings emerg...

Faecal androgen concentrations in adult male spotted hyaenas, Crocuta crocuta, reflect interactions with socially dominant females

Androgens influence many physiological processes in male vertebrates and have been linked to variation in aggression and reproductive behaviour in many species. This study examined relations between social behaviour and androgens excreted by adult male spotted hyaenas. In this species, males rarely direct reproductive aggression towards other males, but they actively court females that are soci...

Innovative problem solving by wild spotted hyenas.

Innovative animals are those able to solve novel problems or invent novel solutions to existing problems. Despite the important ecological and evolutionary consequences of innovation, we still know very little about the traits that vary among individuals within a species to make them more or less innovative. Here we examine innovative problem solving by spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) in their...
